Baby Caleb and the Hernandez Family fight SCID

Donation protected
Hi everyone,

Mayron and Joanna had a pretty healthy pregnancy, that is, until the delivery day. They discovered that Baby Caleb was inverted and had the umbilical cord wrapped around him, making it a high-risk delivery. This was abosuley terrifying for both of them. Thankfully the doctors were incredible and could get Caleb unbreached and delivered safely and healthy. Mayron and Joanna got to take home their precious new firstborn baby boy! Or so they thought. After being out of the hospital for a few days, Mayron and Joanna got one of the worst phone calls you could receive as a new parent. They were told to come back to the hospitable immediately. The tests the doctors had done, as they routinely do for all newborns, showed baby Caleb with an alarmingly low amount of white blood cells. After hours and days of being at the hospital for what seemed like endless testing, they finally got some answers as to what was going on. The doctors diagnosed Caleb with SCID, which stands for severe combined immunodeficiency. This is an extremely rare disorder caused by mutations in the development and function of infection-fighting immune cells. Infants with SCID appear healthy at birth but are highly susceptible to severe infections. The condition is fatal, usually within the first year or two of life, unless infants receive immune-restoring treatments, such as transplants of blood-forming stem cells, gene therapy or enzyme therapy. This Diagnosis of baby Caleb has forever changed their day-to-day lives. They now have to be extremely cautious of who they interact with because they cannot carry anything back to baby Caleb since he is at such a high risk. They are still facing so many uncertainties about what life will look like and how to best help baby Caleb. They have a long road ahead, with many more tests and doctor visits.

With this being said, ChimneyTek has been kind enough to have supported Mayron when he needed to stay home to take care of his wife and his newborn throughout this terrifying process. However, staying home to offer this support has left him under financial strain. With his wife unable to work, his newborn, medical bills and bills in general starting to pile, it has been hard to manage. If anything, We ask for prayers for healing and comfort during this time. We thank you greatly for any extended kindness and cannot express our gratitude in words that could explain it enough!
