Baby Moncada

On April 20th, Mikala took a pregnancy test and was surprised to see a positive after having a miscarriage in January. When you see those 2 pink lines, all you hope & pray for is a healthy baby. On July 31st, at their 18 week anatomy scan, Chris and Mikala learned that their baby has a complex & rare congenital heart defect called d-Transposition of the Greater Arteries. This happens when the aorta and the pulmonary artery are switched, sending oxygenated blood to the lungs and deoxygenated blood to the body. Unfortunately, they also learned that this is something that baby will not grow out of and the only way to repair it is through open heart surgery. Without surgery, the condition is fatal. On that same day, Mikala had an amniocentesis done to rule out any genetic factors. Thankfully, baby’s genetics are normal; however, because of the condition, they were referred to cardiology specialists at Children’s Hospital Colorado located in Denver.

Mikala & Chris are having to relocate when she is 37 weeks, to be induced at 39 weeks. Mikala was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes and is requiring insulin, so there is a possibility of an earlier induction date. Mikala will deliver baby boy in Denver, where he will have surgery within the first week of his life. After baby has his surgery, they will be expected to stay in Denver for up to 6 weeks. Because of this, Mikala will have to leave her full time job & Chris will then be the sole provider for an unknown amount of time. He will have 6 weeks of paternity leave, but unfortunately, it is not fully paid.

As their family/friends, we are humbly asking for donations to help with travel & living expenses and any medical costs; to hopefully relieve any financial stress that may arise in the coming months while they are away. Their main focus should be on their family.
