Baby Robyn's going home / NYC Triathlon

Donation protected
On April 18th 2018, my little niece, Robyn, arrived into the world 9 weeks ahead of schedule. She had a large tumor on her neck and her chance of survival was slim.

After 16 months in hospital - including over 6 months in Intensive Care and dozens of major operations, it’s amazing to say that Robyn is coming home! Now a fully-fledged toddler, Robyn is full of energy and the joys of life. She is so happy and brave, and is an all-round pleasure to be near. And exceptionally cute…see exhibit A:

At the moment she is coming home for a few days a week as she transitions out of Crumlin Children’s Hospital. It is impossible to explain how indebted we are to the team in Crumlin who has cared for Robyn with such incredible skill and shown her so much love. We will never forget that she wouldn’t be with us if not for their herculean efforts, and we remain eternally grateful to each and every person in the organization.

The usual trials and tribulations of raising a toddler are made exponentially more complicated because Robyn breathes through a tracheostomy in her throat and is fed through a ‘peg’ tube that goes directly into her stomach. Once she gets home she will continue to need round-the-clock care for several years, as the tracheostomy is extremely delicate and must be constantly maintained so she can breathe.

Robyn’s mum, dad and grandparents have been trained to provide the care she needs but of course they need to work, sleep and look after Robyn’s older sister, Olivia. Robyn therefore needs nurses to care for her each night at home. The Irish government provides funding for a number of hours of nursing care each night, which is great. However, because Robyn can’t be left on her own for even one second, considerable challenges remain to ensure she gets the essential care she needs.

Enter the Jack and Jill Foundation. Since 1997, the Jack and Jill Foundation has provided care for babies who are born with life threatening conditions like Robyn, with the support of an incredibly talented and generous panel of nurses, who volunteer their time and give reduced-rate care hours 24/7/365 to children like Robyn. Every €16 / $18 we raise equates to one hour of nursing care for Robyn.

We are so grateful that Robyn is coming home and to everyone for their support. If anyone would like to sponsor me for the upcoming NYC Triathlon on July 21st, it’ll be going to a very worthy cause. Any amount large or small will make a difference and will certainly be very much appreciated.

All the best,
Steve
