On February 11, 2018 my sister and Carlos opened up their hopeful hearts on social media and announced their hopes and dreams of having a baby as they tried IUI for the first time. Two weeks later they shared their bad news after a negative pregnancy test. This was not the end of their journey. Although they haven’t been able to publicly share what came next, I am here to report that they have not given up on their dream. In January 2019 they experienced another unsuccessful round of IUI.
Although they were devastated by the news and not knowing how to proceed they once again gathered their strength to continue on their journey. On my sisters 30th birthday it was official the two would embark on an IVF journey when my parents generously gifted my sister and Carlos airfare to Colombia were they would seek treatment by a highly recommended fertility specialist.
My sister and Carlos left to Colombia on June 3, 2019. They left full of hope and positive vibes that would only be chipped away by a series of unfortunate events and bad news after bad news. They were in Colombia for two months and experienced two unsuccessful rounds of IVF. Each time my sister made it to the egg retrieval phase. In this phase they fertilize her eggs with Carlos sperm to create embryos that are then monitored for growth during the next five days. Unfortunately, in both rounds none of the embryos made it to day five and therefore my sister and Carlos never made it to “Transfer Day”.
Fast forward 5 months later and as they pick up the pieces and put themselves back together as best they can. Their bravery once again kicks in as they find the strength to try again and never give up on their dream. My sister and Carlos will be heading back to Colombia this December for another round of IVF.
Now for those of you who don't know my sister Jennifer and her husband Carlos let me tell you a little bit about them:
My sister and I are 7 years apart, so as you can imagine growing up I practically had 2 moms. When I was little I definitely did not understand the value of having a second person to educate me, nurture me, and love me as deeply as my sister has. My sister has wanted to be a mother for as long as I can remember, In fact she chose to be a teacher because of her love for kids. It has been very difficult to have to sit back and watch as my sister suffers, and not be able to do anything except lend a shoulder to cry on and an ear to listen. Which is why I decided to start this campaign for @babyarangorendon. No one can take the shots for my sister or the surgeries or medications or take away her and Carlos' heartache, but we can help to lift some of the burden of dealing with infertility and the financial toll that comes with it. For you to understand a little more about why my sister and Carlos would be amazing parents let me tell you a little more about them.
Carlos and my sister met in NY when they were 17, but Carlos lived in Texas, so for about a year they had a long distance relationship. I experienced endless nights (emphasis on the endless) of phone calls and chats, and my sister borrowing everyone’s phone so she could talk to Carlos all day. I didn’t get it until I met Carlos. Like most people who meet him, I loved him instantly. It is difficult to put into words how amazing Carlos is, but I’ll try. For me he has been another brother and friend, and truly an amazing husband to my sister. He is loving, selfless, and so kind, qualities that will be strengthened when he so deservingly becomes a father. Carlos and my sister have been together for 13 years now, and married for 5. They have formed a beautiful life and home, with my fur niece Sasha, but not having a baby has left a void.
Both are in public service, my sister is a teacher in a title 1 school (low socioeconomic) and Carlos is a paramedic. Jobs that are both rewarding and very admirable, but don’t pay enough to maintain a home, pay off student loans, and afford fertility treatments. Which is why we are asking for your help to raise $20,000 to help pay off some of the debt they’ve incurred with the IVF treatments, and the third round of IVF they will be undergoing now.
