Thank you for your interest in supporting BABYBABYBABY!
My name is Laila J. Franklin. I am an independent dance artist based in Boston, MA raising $6000 this month to support my new evening-length work and the incredible creative team bringing this work to life!
BABYBABYBABY is a dance about dances about love. Tapping into feelings of budding romance, when falling in love is silly and fast and sexy and devastating and you are brilliant and stupid and spellbound, the dance investigates closeness, intimacy, and the human impulse to respond. Conceived as a meta-commentary on popular Contemporary dance aesthetics, obfuscated by post-modern and improvisatory movement practice, it is, at its heart, a work about exploring the ways we give and receive support and care.
BABYBABYBABY is set for its first major public showcase in May 2024 at the Boston Center for the Arts in Martin Hall of Calderwood Pavillion. At this moment, this project is being primarily supported through a 2023/2024 Boston Dancemakers Residency, supported by the Boston Center for the Arts and Boston Dance Alliance. This residency supports Boston-area dance artists with the development of original ensemble work, offering support for the research, development, rehearsal, financial, and production phases of their project. Additionally, this project has received support from the New England Foundation for the Arts’ New England Dance Fund grant program.
While we have deep gratitude for this extensive support, there is still additional support needed to cross the finish line and ensure sustainability for all elements of the project. We are seeking to raise $6000 to close this gap.
Funds raised through this campaign will be used to:
- Cover the remaining collaborators' fees
- Raise dancers’ performance fees
- Retroactively raise dancers’ hourly fees
- Source and coordinate costumes for dancers
In solidarity with artist-activists in Boston such as Victoria Awkward of VLA Dance, MIDDAY Movement Series, Jenna Pollack and Projects, Detritus Dance, Eventual Dance Company, and others, I am committed to financial transparency. This means sharing the budget and financial information with all project collaborators, audience, and funders, with the end goal of increasing financial support and pay equity in the arts.
