Wanna help make a baby?

Dear friends, family and caring/curious strangers.

If you’ve ever watched much daytime television, you understand how costly it can be when someone’s husband tries to make a baby with another unknown woman. Expenses can easily reach into the tens of thousands of dollars.

I should probably back up a bit before anyone gets the wrong idea. You see, my good friend Emily is 32 years old and has been married to her husband Kyle for eight taxing years. (If you’re thinking this is where the other unknown woman comes in, you’re wrong.) Less than a year after Kyle and Emily were married, doctors discovered a grapefruit-sized cyst on her right ovary. I will spare you the gory details, but let’s just say that six years, three surgeries, and seemingly endless tests and treatments later, their arduous battle with ovarian cancer is over.

SPOILER ALERT! Emily won! Unfortunately, a full hysterectomy at 28, while life-saving, left her and Kyle without traditional options for the next phase of their lives: parenthood. But if there’s one thing you can learn from cancer, it’s that where there’s a will, there’s a way.

(Now we get to the unknown other woman)

Emily and Kyle have opted for in-vitro fertilization and a surrogate to carry the baby (literally, she’s an unknown woman!).

You might think that, in our new millennium, non-traditional fertility options would be totally affordable. But the estimated cost is $30,000 – and that’s just for the surrogate expenses. It also turns out that their insurance won’t cover this type of pregnancy.

Kyle and Emily don’t currently have thirty large, because they recently purchased a dozen jet skis.

Kidding! Their finances have been largely drained from her protracted battle with cancer, including Emily's monthly trips from their home in Washington, D.C., to receive life-saving treatment at Houston’s MD Anderson Cancer Center. (Alas, they’ve not been able to find a surrogate who accepts as payment frequent flyer miles.)

So that leads us here, to what might be one of the most unusual Go Fund Me pages you’ve ever seen (but maybe not ).

This is Emily and Kyle’s opportunity to experience the kind of parental happiness that most couples take for granted. And they deserve it. In spite of – or maybe because of – the challenges they’ve faced together, they are unusually passionate, incredibly strong, and unfailingly optimistic in the face of adversity. They also have terrific senses of humor. They will be terrific parents.

Seriously, make a donation. Many thanks!

Oh and p.s. All joking aside, Emily and Kyle gave me permission to share their inspiring story. I love you guys!!
