Film Synopsis!
When Steebie and his bestfriend Tris go to a rolling skating party on New Years, they see Franky, a girl they went to middle school with who Steebie has always had a crush on. Tris encourages him to talk to her, as this might be his final chance to tell her how he feels. Things might work out, if he doesn’t get in his own way first.
About the Film!
Inspired by movies like Roll Bounce (2005) and Superbad (2007), The Rink (2025) is a coming-of-age comedy, following characters who are flawed yet relatable. The central theme of the film is the concept that our main characters are stuck in their own restrictive ways of thinking, going in circles in their minds. This is paralleled by the fact that it takes place at a roller skating rink, a place where you literally go in a circle.
Ultimately, I don’t want this film to take itself too seriously, but I do hope that it conveys a deeper feeling that resonates with those who view it.
Directors Statement!
Growing up, part of me always knew that I wanted to be a director. As a kid, I would write stories and perform them for my (very patient) parents using my Legos. In middle and high school, I would make vlogs and hype videos for the school and friends. I graduated from Central Michigan University 2 years ago with a degree in marketing, convinced that I was heading straight for the business world. Instead, I ended up in nonprofit, where I learned more about the real world and learned the stories of the amazing people in it. Last summer (2023), I worked on a short film where I met people who are now some of my best friends and closest collaborators. I was the cinematographer on that film, and fell in love with the entire process and the thrill of being on set. I want to tell good stories, and to work alongside people to create meaningful work and experiences.
How you can help!
We begin shooting at the end of February 2025, and are looking for some additional support to cover the costs of production (cast+crew, equipment, wardrobe, props, etc.)
By helping to fund this short film, you will be joining in our effort to not only tell an entertaining and emotionally grounded story, but to display the talent that exists here locally! Additionally, this will help to demonstrate that Grand Rapids is a place where films can and should be born and brought to life. Anything helps and is greatly appreciated!
