Baker Family Bereavement Fund

Stephen and Tricia were married seven years ago and moved to New Hampshire from Utah so that Stephen could attend law school. During that time, two sweet little boys came into their lives, one with the red hair and spirited temperament of Trish's Scottish heritage. After a short stint at a local law firm, in 2016 Stephen took the leap and opened his own law practice, specializing in elder law/estate planning/medicaid planning. His reason for choosing this branch of law? To protect the elderly from financial exploitation in a way that his grandmother was not protected years ago.

This choice reflects the heart and soul of the Baker family. If ever anyone was in need, Stephen or Trish were the first on the scene. Their home was the center of midnight game nights, murder mystery parties, backyard barbeques, Sunday dinners...a place of love and laughter and joy.

On Sunday their lives were turned upside down. Stephen and 4 of his 6 siblings were in the backcountry of Zion National Park to hike and rappel several remote canyons. Stephen had dedicated months to the planning of this trip and was beyond excited that so many siblings committed to attend - they had not been together for several years. Leaving his wife and two little boys in Salt Lake City, Stephen and his siblings set up camp east of Zion National Park. On Sunday morning, September 3 , they planned on hiking down Engelstead Hollow, which includes a series of rappels, and then through the Narrows into Zion National Park. After successfully rappeling 200 feet of a 300-foot descent, Stephen somehow lost control and fell into a rock bed. He passed away before a rescue helicopter could reach him.

Friends and neighbors, the Baker family is devastated. Stephen has been a solo practitioner for just over a year. With the expense of starting his own firm, he never "got around" to purchasing life insurance. His two little boys, ages 3 and 5, will grow up without the love and charisma of their amazing father.

We are asking for any help you feel is appropriate. Even a small amount can go a long way towards both funeral expenses and allowing this family time to heal emotioally before resuming the challenges of work and school. All funds will be directed to Tricia Baker.  Our goal is to provide her some financial peace of mind while she and her children adjust to being on their own.

We, her friends and family, thank you for your generosity. You are doing what she cannot do for herself. Please go to the following news links for details on the story.
