Balboa Baseball Campaign

Hi, my name is Travis Porter. I've been working in service to San Francisco students and families as a teacher in SFUSD for over fifteen years. Last year I was asked to expand my role at Balboa High School by also taking on the freshman/sophomore baseball program. Already balancing a very "full plate" as a father, husband and teacher, I was initially reluctant to take on more. However, I was ultimately compelled to accept the challenge when I learned that the team lacked enough players to continue their 2022 season. As a lifelong baseball player myself, I wanted to ensure that our students would continue to have the opportunity to experience the many joys, life lessons, friendships, and memories that this beautiful game enriched my life with.

So now here I am, at the start of our second season, and very excited to report that interest and enthusiasm for learning and playing the game has grown rapidly!! Last year we started with a lean team of only ten players, but this spring we've had nearly twenty-five scholar-athletes wanting to tryout for the 2023 season!

This surge in student interest is exciting to be a part of...but also presents the logistical challenge that fielding a full team is expensive! In addition to the long laundry list of required team equipment (e.g. regulation bats, helmets, various practice/training tools, bases, etc.), each individual player must also acquire personal items like cleats and gloves. The sum total of these numerous expenses can exhaust the funding allotted to our athletic programs. Additionally, the personal expense of purchasing required equipment can present an economic hurdle for some.

Your donation will help ensure the continued growth of our baseball program by:

1) Sponsoring scholar-athletes who present an economic need by covering associated personal costs of playing baseball (i.e. purchase of glove, cleats, etc.)

2) Funding the purchase of quality training equipment required for effective skill development.
