Please Join Balboa Park Heritage Association ["BPHA"] as a Member, Supporter and Volunteer now and support our Park advocacy, free Park tours, use of Sponsored Social Media and other communications tools to ensure our Park's secure future.  Come "Love Balboa Park" (c) with us !

The Mayor proposed leasing 25.5 acres of dedicated Park Lands in the Inspiration Point area of Balboa Park for hotels, retail stores, restaurants and other commercial development.  The objective was "to make the Park self-sustaining".

With your support, we defeated this bone-headed concept. Parks are PARKS, not lands to generate income via non-Park uses.

We do not expect our beaches streets,sidewalks libraries,police and fire departments to pay for themselves.  Why should we ruin Park Lands in this foolish pursuit of "win-win, public-private" foolishness?

Help us continue to oppose further bone-headed proposals to commercially develope portions of the Park [https://www.sdcitybeat.com/news-and-opinion/spin-cycle/backward-in-the-park/article_d0e3f652-0c91-11ea-9608-8b55eef7b635.html ].

Let's make 2020 a good year for our Park. With your support we can succeed.
YOU supported our Park Advocacy that helped kill the dreaded Jacobs Plan to disfigure the Cabrillo Bridge ,construct an ugly paid parking garage in the core of the Park and Paid Parking throughout Balboa Park. YOUR kind support and volunteer efforts were spectacularly successful. Tragically ,the Jacob's threat is Zombie-like, not yet dead. Candidate for mayor Todd Gloria in an April 2019 speech said he still supported this awful plan,and "if elected would work to resurrect  it."

His opponent, Barbara Bry , opposes and will continue to oppose Jacobs.

We will work to publicize these dramatically different positions so Park Lovers may be well-informed donors and voters in the Mayoral race.

We must aggressively defend, protect and properly maintain every square inch of our Balboa Park.  If we fail to do so, politicians will give it

Recent rains have benefited the Park's under-irrigated trees. The failing roofs and mold, mildew and dry-rot damaged historic structures, not so much. The neglected storm drains and pipes, ditto.

We have a long list of critically important objectives for early 2020:

1. Inform the electorate so politicians who support a permanent dedicated funding source for the Park are elected, using sponsored Social Media, free and informational walking tours and a Volunteer Station in the Park; do we want a Mayor who strongly supported the Jacobs Plan for Paid Parking and ruining the Cabrillo Bridge, and who neglected the Park during his 8 years on the City Council ? Or a Mayor who loves and appreciates the Park who will support a permanent dedicated funding source for its needs?

2. Work towards placing a small increase in the hotel tax to provide that permanent dedicated funding source on the November, 2022 ballot;

3. Continue to oppose further bone-headed proposals to commercially develope portions of the Park [https://www.sdcitybeat.com/news-and-opinion/spin-cycle/backward-in-the-park/article_d0e3f652-0c91-11ea-9608-8b55eef7b635.html ];

4. Support creative approaches for innovative and appropriate use of Park Lands, such as a productive, educational and sustainable community garden space [https://www.disclose.tv/atlanta-turns-7-acres-of-vacant-land-into-the-largest-free-food-forest-in-the-country-368282].

Let's make 2020 a good year for our Park. With your support we can succeed.
