BAME books and resources for my Primary School
I work in a primary school and during lockdown I have had the opportunity to spend a considerable amount of time working in our school library refreshing our resources. What struck me is how under-represented BAME is in our literature. Also, the Chichester area where our school is located is also under-represented with BAME children. Therefore, it is crucial that we allow the children in our school to learn and appreciate the different cultures in our country and beyond.
I spoke to my head teacher who has been fully supportive of the need to replenish our books and ensure that they are fully representative of all communities and cultures. She agreed that this would be a priority with future purchasing.
However, the recent events with the #Blacklivesmatter movement combined with my previous jobs, where I developed a passion for diversity and inclusion, equal access for all and raising awareness of these issues, I started to think about how I could make a personal contribution to this cause.
As a result, I decided to set up this page, to raise funds for the school, where I work, to purchase BAME books and resources for our primary children to enjoy across all age groups. We know that the children will really enjoy being able to access this information and will raise their understanding of the issues faced which will support their growing respect for all cultures. Education at a young age is so crucial.
I have researched BAME books and as you can see from the attached photo there are so many BAME books out there. I would love to see these on shelves of our library ready for the children to embrace and enjoy. If you are able to donate to this cause it would be so gratefully revived. Thank you in advance for any support. Georgina
