Banned Book Fair

Donation protected
This Banned Book Fair is a celebration of banned books and local BIPOC authors, shedding light on the challenges imposed on literature addressing race and sexuality in the United States. Beyond the immediate act of banning a book lies a profound impact—far-reaching consequences that extends beyond the pages themselves. Banning a book isn't merely about removing a piece of literature; it's the initial step toward eradicating not only an author's work but also their humanity and the cultural context that surrounds them.

In essence, when someone advocates for the exclusion of a person's perspective from the shelves, when fear prompts the desire to silence and conceal them from society, it marks a dangerous step toward treating them as though they are non-existent or should be. This process is the initial phase of a journey toward ignorance, hate, and, unfortunately, real-world violence.

The rise in book bans, contributes to an atmosphere of intolerance. The American Library Association's (ALA) data from 2023 highlights approximately 700 challenges to 1,915 individual books, with library challenges accounting for 49% of documented cases—significantly higher than the 16% reported in the same period in 2022. To counteract this censorship, we've established the Banned Book Fair.

We earnestly seek your support through donations to fund essential aspects such as the venue, promotional materials, and author honorariums. Our challenge is a direct effort to confront the imbalances and distortions created by stifling voices. The concept is straightforward: combat ignorance by reading extensively and embracing literature that challenges your comfort zone and understanding.

Empathy, cultivated through diverse reading experiences, empowers individuals to make informed decisions and erect a personal defense against all forms of hatred. Reading books from authors of different backgrounds and practicing empathy dismantles false categories, dispels stereotypes, and encourages the community to come together.

At BDSA, we deeply value our role in connecting people with knowledge that fosters empathy. Knowledge is a treasure worth defending, and every banned book chosen for reading and learning resurrects a vital human voice, contributing to a richer understanding of the world.
