Be the Light (Magic Crates with Bookwallah Org.)

Thank you for your interest in Bookwallah’s mission!  Despite extreme challenges faced across the globe in 2020, we are working to shine some light here in the U.S. by adding focus to our Bookwallah Magic Crate Libraries©.  We launched our Magic Crate program late in 2019 and we picked up speed in 2020  in an effort to broaden our reach here at home, especially in the face of this ongoing pandemic.  Pictured here are the Magic Crates coming to life by way of local Chicago children and their finished works of art, filled with books which are now displayed throughout the Chicagoland area in small businesses, hospitals, youth centers and corner stores.
“I noticed one child instantly went from sad to happy when he was gifted with a storybook." "One little girl asked if she could take one home for her big brother." – These are just some immediate reactions from local business owners who have piloted Bookwallah’s Magic Crate Libraries© which are crafted locally and kept stocked with storybooks for patrons to take home.  To start, the Magic Crates have been placed in essential corner stores throughout our headquartered City of Chicago where children may have been affected by gun violence, poverty, and other major types of trauma.  Bookwallah challenges these potentially negative environments by creating a change in consciousness – and we do so by using storybooks to begin to heal and empower these children of trauma.
Why are expanding our Magic Crate Libraries to the U.S.?  While there are public libraries in the United States, many children do not get the opportunity to visit them. The Magic Crate Libraries put books in the hands and minds of children and their parents in a location they already frequent- such as a local business or corner store. Storybooks then become part of their everyday lives. They not only make owning a book seamless and accessible, they give children a sense of pride and self-worth, opening up their world to new possibilities.  Small business owners also feel positively involved in their local communities, fostering stronger bonds with their customers by simply hosting a Magic Crate Library© at no cost to their business.
In today's pandemic inflicted world, where there are serious concerns for children of trauma and their mental health, YOUR support can make a tremendous difference.   Together, we can help inspire dreams for children in the most poverty-stricken areas of Chicago.  These children can "travel" through the hero's journey found in these books so that their world may open to new possibilities. At Bookwallah, we believe every child deserves the hope of a happy story.

Thank you in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to us. We are hoping to raise $10,000 this Giving Tuesday and throughout the holiday season, as part of our "Be the Light" campaign, for which proceeds will go directly to U.S. expansion of the Magic Crate Library program.  All donations gifted on Giving Tuesday will be matched by a generous donor for double the impact!

Please reach out to one of our team members if you have any questions and feel free to share this campaign with your network directly.

Below you will find more information regarding the work Bookwallah has traditionally been focused on as well as how we pivoted our global operations in order to thrive during the pandemic.  From transformation of a shipping container into a beautiful library safe haven, to shifting of in-person creative healing sessions to virtual ones, Bookwallah volunteers remain dedicated to ensuring the mission forges ahead.
Our Associate Board partners abroad are making continuous efforts to enhance virtual programming, including bringing internet and smart devices into some of our most remote orphanages. In addition the International Justice Mission has partnered with Bookwallah to deliver locally crafted Magic Crates, with each crate impacting up to 300 children; their goal is to launch 100 new "Magic Crate" libraries to children impacted by sex-trafficking.
We recognize times are tough for all people-  and those who have been hit the hardest are children who are most vulnerable, including those who have experienced extreme trauma both here in the U.S. and abroad.  Those who are stigmatized and marginalized due to poverty, HIV or sex-trafficking, children who have experienced natural disasters like drought and tsunamis, and children who have been orphaned by this pandemic.  As always, the well-being of the children in our programs is our greatest concern, both physically and emotionally. There is a lot of work to be done, and we cannot do it alone. Bookwallah needs your support to continue to heal and empower these children and to broaden our reach.
