Barista Behind the Bar is hitting the road!

Hello, my name is Camila. I am a longtime coffee industry professional, having started my coffee journey at the age of 19!
This summer I am getting myself in an old Ford conversion van and traveling around the US interviewing baristas far and wide. I am interested in the experience of the American barista, what sorts of challenges our industry is facing, what kinds of barriers baristas have faced in their careers, and how we make our work spaces accessible and safe for everyone who shares our passion.
What I have developed most during my work in coffee is a sense of love for the craft and the community one can build around this deceptively simple ritual. My goal is to open up honest and compassionate dialogue within our coffee world in the interest of bettering our industry.
I will be posting updates via social media, blog-format writing and at the end of my journey I plan on compiling findings and stories into a curriculum to share with employers who are interested in improving hiring, training, and working conditions.
.
I have created this Go Fund Me page in order to help offset the costs of this project. The money raised through Go Fund Me will go towards:
Gas- I am planning on covering a ton of ground. In order to keep traveling and cover as much ground as possible, I anticipate spending around $1,200 over the course of the summer.
Food- I will be cooking most of my meals, and plan on spending roughly $900 for the duration of the project.
Insurance- coverage for my van is about $50 a month, $150 for the duration of the project.
AAA and emergency repairs fund- $1186
Lodging- I anticipate staying with friends around half the time, and paying for camping spots the rest of my time on the road. Cost of camping for 30 nights and parks pass- $530
Printed Material- at the end of my trip I plan on compiling insights found through this project in a pamphlet to distribute to employers. Cost of printing 500 pamphlets is about $300.
Planning costs- this project has around $1,000 upfront that I have already invested from person funds, for van repairs, promotional pictures, planning and website help.
Buffer- I am budgeting in $500 for unforeseen costs.
= $5,766.
I am SO grateful for any and all support in order to make this project possible! This work is so important to me and our community, and this trip will be so much fun. I look forward to meeting excellent people, making connections, and drinking tons of delicious coffee.
As a small token of gratitude:
Donations of $50+ will get a personalized postcard from my travels!
Donations of $100+ will get a bag of coffee purchased during my travels!
Donations of $200+ will get both a postcard and a bag of coffee!
Donations of $300+ will get both a postcard and coffee, plus a small road trip souvenir!
Thank you so much!!
