Barrett Needs a New Liver at Age 6
Donation protected
At the beginning of the week Barrett was an active healthy 6-year-old boy. His life was filled with going to school, playing outside, doing Jujitsu, and working out with his dad. He is a great little brother to his sister. He’s also a super big brother who helped his mom with his younger brother, and new baby sister. Today he's in Primary Children's Hospital in Utah. He's being told by his parents, doctors, and nurses that he needs a new liver. At the age of 6, he doesn’t quite understand the gravity of the situation; but his parents do. A 6-year-old child requiring a liver transplant is devastating news for any parent, family member, or good friend.
I’m sure everyone can relate to the seriousness of what they are all about to endure. As of this moment, the doctors have no idea what caused his liver failure at the age of 6. All they know is that his ammonia levels are high causing encephalopathy; his blood clotting ability is critically low which means the slightest bump can cause him to bleed; and none of the medications are helping. Earlier today he had a run of ventricular tachycardia which can become life-threatening if it continues. Thankfully the physicians, nurses, and ancillary staff are top notch. Primary Children’s Hospital is a leader in pediatric organ transplantation and offers comprehensive evaluation and care to patients who may need an organ transplant.
The family currently lives 8 hours away from the hospital where Barrett is being treated. After the transplant Barret will be required to live within 1 hour of the hospital for at least 3 months with monthly checkups for at least a year. Barrett will be monitored by the physicians for the next 12 years. As you can image the travel is going to be tough and extremely expensive; therefore, they are planning to move to Utah if Barrett’s dad can get an emergency transfer with his job.
Any donations will be used for Barrett’s medical needs and the family move to Utah. We have hope that future will hold a successful outcome for Barrett’s surgery and recovery. With your help we can ease some of the financial burden Barrett’s family will endure. Thank you all for your love and support.
