Full Bellies, Happy Hearts started as the initiative -later turned into a Foundation- of a group of chefs and communicators who got together in June 2016 in order to prepare and bring a hearty soup to the children, doctors and nurses at JM De Los Rios Children Hospital in Caracas.
Nowadays, with the crisis in the hospital solved but with a deepening food crisis in the country, we changed gears and are currently working with several restaurants and kitchens and hundreds of volunteers. The Barriga Llena network serves meals to over 100 senior citizens in a retirement home and over 200 children in two informal school cafeterias. In both cases, we provide them a fully prepared meal, from Monday to Sunday, 365 days a year. In that way guaranteeing they have at least one balanced meal a day.
Since its creation, we've served over 200.000 meals.
Who are we?
A group of chefs, restauranteurs and communicators based in Caracas, Venezuela:
Francisco Abenante, Golden Fork recipient and Chef of La Casa Bistró; Carlos García, also a Golden Fork recipient and chef of Alto Restaurant and Obra Miami. Chef and restauranteur David Akinin, who with Abenante had the original idea in 2016. Gastronomical entrepreneurs Valentina Semtei y Omar Sharam, and communicators Paola Bertorelli, Ana Isabel Otero and Juan Carlos Bertorelli joined to form de Foundation.
The team has grown continuously with people and institutions willing to help with their time and donations: restaurant La Esquina at the VIP Hotel, restaurant La Sibilla at the Cayena Hotel, María Elisa Römer - chef of Bal-Sam restaurant group- , Lola restaurant, JWMarriott Hotel, Casa Mar Catering Agency, Grill Market restaurant and Elisa Bermúdez @lovelygourmet with a great team of volunteers.
What is our next goal?
We will soon start a process of training mothers in the communities we help, to become cooks or small entrepreneurs who can break the cycle of receiving to become creators of their own wellbeing.
Why is my name in the campaign?
I am Rodolfo Agrella, a Venezuelan citizen currently living in New York City. I've been involved with Barriga Llena Corazón Contento since it was created in 2016, as a friend and volunteer outside the Venezuelan frontier, helping them get funds in order to keep feeding the most vulnerable children and elderly in Caracas.

¿Qué es Barriga Llena Corazón Contento?
Barriga Llena Corazón Contento comenzó como una iniciativa, hoy en día transformada en fundación, de un grupo de chefs y comunicadores quienes, en junio del 2016, se unieron para llevarle sopa diariamente a los niños del Hospital JM de los Ríos y a los médicos y enfermeras tratantes. Hoy, ya resuelta la emergencia que originó nuestra acción, integramos el trabajo de 10 restaurantes y cocinas y de centenares de voluntarios, para llevarle alimentos diariamente a la casa hogar Madre Teresa de Calcuta en Mamera y dos comedores infantiles: La Cocuiza y Las Casitas en Mesuca, Petare, así como, eventualmente, a 5 otras casas hogar e instituciones. La fundación sirve una comida diaria a más de 100 ancianos y más de 200 niños de lunes a domingo, los 365 días del año. Así garantizando al menos una comida balanceada al día.
A la fecha, hemos entregado más de 200.000 comidas.
¿Quienes somos?
Un grupo de chefs, restauradores y comunicadores: Francisco Abenante –Tenedor de Oro y Chef de La Casa Bistró, Carlos García, también Tenedor de Oro y chef de Alto Restaurant y de Obra Miami, el chef y restaurador David Akinin, junto con Abenante los creadores de la idea, los restauradores Valentina Semtei, y Omar Sharam, y los comunicadores Paola Bertorelli, Ana Isabel Otero y Juan Carlos Bertorelli.
Al equipo se ha ido uniendo más gente dispuesta a colaborar: el Restaurante La Esquina, en el hotel VIP, el restaurante La Sibilla en el Hotel Cayena, María Elisa Römer, chef del Grupo Bal-Sam, el restaurante Lola, JWMarriott, Agencia de Festejos Casa Mar, Grill Market y Elisa Bermúdez @lovelygourmet con un gran equipo de voluntarios.
¿Cuál es nuestro próximo objetivo?
Muy pronto estaremos iniciando el proceso de formación para entrenar como cocineras y pequeñas empresarias a las madres de las comunidades donde trabajamos, y convertirlas en emprendedoras gastronómicas que rompan el ciclo de recibir para convertirse en generadoras de bienestar.
¿Por qué aparece mi nombre en la campaña?
Yo soy Rodolfo Agrella, un ciudadano venezolano actualmente residiendo en New York. He estado involucrado con la fundación desde sus inicios en 2016 como voluntario fuera del país, ayudando a conseguir fondos para alimentar a los ancianos y niños más necesitados.
