BARRY JOHNSTON | SEANAD CANDIDATE (NUI PANEL)

As the first overseas candidate for the NUI panel, based in London, I’m running to ensure the Irish abroad finally have a say in the politics of their home nation.

Having chosen by referendum to keep the Seanad, we now need to make the second chamber more democratic and work to repay the trust that voters have put in it. That begins with the candidates themselves. The Seanad can be renewed by representing the voices that are currently excluded or pushed to the margins of society.

We desperately need a new generation of people in Irish politics. If you agree, I need your support.

Why Give?

I'm not asking for your money lightly. But there is a crowded field of candidates, many with significant financial and other resources.

Running as an entirely independent candidate I will need your support in order to compete.

The money you donated will cover part of the cost of designing and printing material to be delivered to over 100,000 people (postal costs for one delivery are met by the state).

But remember: Under electoral law, you must be an Irish citizen to donate.

About Me

As a campaigner I’ve worked with individual activists and communities across Ireland and around the world on issues as diverse as mental health, women’s rights, climate change and corporate tax avoidance, making sure people can claim their rights and hold governments and companies to account. These are the values and experiences I will bring to the role.

I will aim to represent all those people - not just the Irish overseas, but the homeless, migrants, travellers and others - who are being told they don't have a place in Irish society or that their opinion doesn't matter.

This includes campaigning for all citizens to have a vote in future Seanad elections.

EmigrantManifesto

Today one in six Irish-born people live abroad. Yet Ireland, unlike over 120 other countries, does not allow its overseas citizens to vote.

The 2016 Dáil and Seanad elections come at a pivotal moment in Irish history with the country emerging from the economic crisis and approaching the centenary of the proclamation of the Republic.

All Irish citizens should have a say in the direction our country takes from here.

That's why I'm running on the EmigrantManifesto with Ed Davitt on the Trinity Panel.
