Baton Rouge Community Fridge
Donation protected
Update 9/23/23:
Yes We Cannibal is planning to rebuild a more permanent and long-term structure for its fridge later this Fall. They are collecting a list of volunteers - inexperienced in construction is fine but also looking for a few experienced builders - as well as both cash donations to GoFundMe and any in-kind direct material donations (mostly treated lumber and some roofing). A work weekend has not been scheduled yet but if you are interested and likely to be available, please send a note to meetmeat at yeswecannibal dot org listing contact info, general availability, and special skills.
Original post (2021):
Inspired by efforts in other cities over the past year to combat issues directly impacting their neighborhoods, the Baton Rouge Community Fridge is finally open at Yes We Cannibal located at 1600 Government St, Baton Rouge, LA.
Open to the public 24/7, the community fridge is free for anyone to take what they need and give what they can. Our objective is to de-stigmatize and support folks with food insecurity, minimize food waste, and offer a direct way for anyone to get involved in improving conditions for everyone in Baton Rouge.
So far funds have been used to purchase materials for the weather-proof shelter. Going forward, funds will be used to purchase any necessities that aren't donated for the second community fridge (refrigerator, building materials for a weather-proof structure, cabinet for pantry items, thermometers, extension cord, hand sanitizer dispenser and cleaning supplies) and potentially cover electricity costs for the fridge. Extra funds will go towards the continual stocking of items for the fridge and pantry.
