Battle Creek Middle School 8th Grade DC Trip

Hi, my name is Alli Kildahl, and I'm a teacher at Battle Creek Middle School on the East Side of St Paul. We want to take students on a school trip to Washington, DC in April for the first time since before the pandemic. Battle Creek is a Title I school, and our community includes a lot of hard-working families who can't afford to send their kids on a trip like this. You'd be helping to fund a 3-day tour, including flights, hotel, transportation, food, and admissions costs, so kids can visit government centers, museums, memorials, monuments, and historical sites.

Students in places like Edina or Minnetonka are often easily able to pay their way with a little fundraising and some help from their parents, and it's not fair that those largely white, affluent students should have better opportunities than our students of color at Battle Creek. So I can't think of a better way for any of us to spend a little - or a lot - of money than here, to send my incredible 8th graders to our nation's capital, where they can be empowered, and shown their voice matters. We should all be proud to visit the home of our federal government, and my students are no exception. Out of everyone I've ever met, these kids are the most likely to make our world a better place.
