Battling Cancer With The Burks

To know Barbara is to love her. At 64 years old, she has begun battling her second round of breast cancer after nine years, but this time it is stage 4 and has metastasized to her lungs, with an inoperable mass blocking an airway.

Now, essentially operating from one lung, her breathing is very difficult, often feeling like she is suffocating. She experiences severe daily coughing spells multiple times per day, which have caused additional internal injuries. She gets sick with vertigo and vomiting. Her body is weakening from fighting these symptoms, and her morale has been beat down.

Barbara’s has started a clinical trial, and her treatment is taking place in Mobile, Alabama, a little over an hour commute from her house in Gulf Breeze, Florida. She works on staff in the youth ministry at her church, and she plans to continue to work as long as she can. However, she will inevitably miss work as she fights this cancer.

Her amazing husband, Buddy, is also struggling with a knee surgery gone bad. After over a year of his knee not healing from surgery, it was discovered he is allergic to the cobalt in his knee replacement, and he will have to get it removed, have a temporary replacement, and then a new permanent replacement. And all this while trying to build the home in which they’ve been dreaming about spending their retirement years. They are hoping to expedite the building process, which will be significantly more expensive, but we all know how reliable construction schedules can be!

Needless to say, the timing of all of this is overwhelming, and it’s difficult to make plans in this season. Your prayers and support of all kinds are so greatly appreciated and felt. Thank you for loving this family so well!
