Battling Long Covid. Support for Corrina and Tom.
I’ve started this Go Fund Me because, if I’m honest, I’m at a loss at knowing how to let my friends know how much I and so many others miss and think of them constantly.
My friend lives ten minutes down the road, but because of her extreme Long Covid I can never go in to see her.
Corrina was working as a nurse on the frontline at the very start of the pandemic when PPE was not recommended in all wards, including the one she worked on. Her partner Tom instantly lost work as an outdoor instructor as lockdown started. They contracted Covid in April of last year and developed Long Covid over the following months. They have not left their homes since September 2020 and Corrina has been bed ridden since November 2020. They are unable to read, watch TV, or even listen to music. Their families moved them from their shared home in Kendal and took them back to their childhood homes in Northamptonshire and the Forest of Dean to care for them.
They haven’t seen each other in over a year and because of the severity of their Long Covid they are generally unable to use their phones, for video calls, phone calls and even text messages. They miss each other and their friends so much. They have tried various things to help get better, from gentle exercises and acupuncture when they were able to last year, to meditation, dietary changes, vitamin supplements and medications, but nothing has yet to help.
Both love the outdoors a tremendous amount, with Tom starting his own outdoor instructor business to make climbing and mountaineering outside part of his daily work. They both love cycling, hiking, climbing, and swimming. It is hard to comprehend that neither has been outside for over a year. They are currently in a permanent state of Lockdown unsure of when it will lift.
Covid has worn most of us down and this second year of the pandemic has dragged by punctuated with the happy relief many of us have experienced getting to see our loved ones again. The fervour we felt for those caring for us and holding together the NHS has possible dulled as life reasserts itself. But the dangers people faced to care and protect our most ill and vulnerable are still having a lasting impact we should never forget. Whether it be people like Corrina and Tom still held in the grasp of Covid or for the countless people on the frontline suffering with incredible levels of stress, anxiety, PTSD, depression and just generally being burnt out.
I’ve created this page for Corrina and Tom, this being the only way I could think of letting people know about their situation and to let them know that people really care about what is happening to them and how much their friends love and miss them desperately.
Thank you for any support you can give, whether a donation or sharing Corrina and Tom’s story, it is greatly appreciated.
