Baxter Springs fire fighter Lt. Malachi Brown
Donation protected
On behalf of my sister Jessica and brother in law Malachi Brown I have started this go fund me account. Jessi and Malachi are two of the most selfless people I know. They are always the first to lend a helping hand or go out of their way to make sure others needs are always met yet never ask for help in return. Now it’s our turn to come together to take care of them. The outpouring of community support has been amazing to witness and as Malachi’s story has began to reach across the country we hope this fundraiser will be shared far and wide. Jessi and Malachi have 3 kids at home cheering dad on- This family is more than deserving and appreciate each and every donation. Thank you all. For more of Malachi’s story please read the updates from my sister below.
Jessi has read and will continue to read Malachi all your messages.
On Friday October 25th, 2021 905, Lt Malachi Brown was injured in a structure fire near 14th and Lions road in Baxter Springs, KS. He went to Joplin, MO by ambulance and was then flown to the Burn unit in Springfield, MO.
He has severe 3rd degree burns over 27% of his body and is in a medically induced coma. He is sedated and on a ventilator.
There has been nothing "official" but after talking to several nurses it may be December before he gets to leave the hospital, hopefully to go home, but could be a rehab facility for physical therapy. If he gets to go home sooner that would be amazing, if he has to stay later, him healthy and safe is all that matters. This is the closest thing to a time-line we have gotten.
This is going to be a very long and hard journey. I will update as we go, I only ask that people are sensitive when talking to the kids or sending messages in general. We feel all the love. He has such a long road ahead of him. Please continue with the thoughts, good vibes and prayers, not only for Malachi's physical healing, his mental healing, but the healing of all of his family, and the hearts of all of our local fire departments as they are also going through this journey with him.

Malachi's surgery has been post-poned until tomorrow, Tuesday. This was a decision the Dr. made to make sure he had the best staffing available to assist him. Thank you all.

Malachi had surgery for his grafts this morning. They were able to do the back of his head, neck, back, forearms, and hands. The Dr. wasn't able to graft from his shoulders to his elbow on either arm at this time due to the severity of the burn. The area on both arms were debrided and a biodegradable temporizing matrix was placed, and will later be grafted again (in 3-4 weeks). They placed a wound vac to help aid in the healing process. He is still sedated/ventilated and all of his vitals remain stable.

Malachi has been pretty stable throughout the day. The plan is to keep him sedated/ventilated till atleast Monday. This is allows them to keep him still, manage the pain and hopefully decrease the healing time of the grafts. There probably won't be to much to update until then. Thank you all for your continued thoughts and prayers.

Malachi is having some difficulties and is being treated for pneumonia in both of his lungs. This is a critical time in his healing process. Dr's have said it is likely he will get worse before he gets better, he will have some rocky days ahead but he is young and strong and the Dr. has said he is confident that, this will aid in his recovery. Please continue to keep him in your thoughts, good vibes and prayers.

Today the Dr took a look at Malachi's grafts. About 80% of the grafts that were placed are appearing to have adhered. He is still sedated and ventilated. Along with the pneumonia he now has ARDS (Acute respiratory distress syndrom). The main focus right now is his lungs. The secondary focus is the BTM placed on his left arm, he has developed an infection. They are treating both his lungs and arm aggressively. He is still in very critical condition, every thought and prayer is appreciated. We should have a better idea of whats to come in the next 48 hours

Malachi had a little bit of a set back today, he had a pneumothorax (collapsed lung) and is still having some issues with his kidneys. They placed a chest tube and will leave it until he is no longer sedated/ventilated. His fever has gone down and if he can maintain where he is now, they will start weaning him off the paralytic to hopefully help in his lungs healing.
(10/28/2021 - 9:52 P.M.)
Malachi was able to switch back to a conventional vent today. He is still sedated/ventilated but this is great news! He was also able to come off the nimbex (paralytic) completely! He is still having some issues with his kidneys and blood pressure and his lungs will take quite a while to heal. His Dr. said though he is still in very critical condition, he thinks he is finally starting to head up the mountain. This will undoubtedly be a long journey, a roller coaster with ups and downs, but I am calling this day a WIN.
Thank you all for taking on this journey with us. We are so blessed.
