Help build an independent, secure online archive for Berlin Community Radio (BCR)
BCR was an independent online broadcasting platform founded in 2013 by myself, Anastazja Moser and Sarah Miles. After six beautiful, challenging years the station closed down in February 2019 due to ongoing financial struggles. A year later, we got hit with 1.210,11 EUR accounting bill - for the 2015-19 period. As I am already paying off a 3.5K overdraft left from the months after stations closing when I was unable to find work, this has pushed me to reach out to the community that I believe I worked hard to support in previous years and to ask for help. For the past year, whenever in a social, public setting I have been approached by people who were either involved with the station or listeners and fans telling me how saddened they were by it coming to an end and how meaningful it has been to them. I am now here asking you to come together and help me turn a page and come to the party on March 22nd to celebrate all the ways BCR brought us all together FB EVENT FOR THE PARTY and to help me pay this bill and for all those who are not in Berlin, but feel like BCR meant something to them, please donate some money and very importantly- help spread the word! The absolutely last thing I feel like doing right now is paying Facebook to reach the people who might be interested in this cause. An organic boost from the community would be a wonderful way to beat the awful structure of those platforms.
As I do not like to ask you guys to simply give me money to pay my debts, I want to work for it and to find a positive goal for the campaign. Many people have asked about our archive and if we have done any steps to secure the cultural output of the station besides relying on external platforms.
I would like to use the money donated by you to do the following:
1. Purchase 2 new external hard drives and backup the studio computer as well as the existing hard drive with first two years of shows.
2. Research cloud storage, consult with archivists, tech and IT people to find the best solution for BCR Archive. Currently discussing ideas like Amazon server, Google Drive or pursuing decentralized model (IFPS) with a bittorrent access.
3. Once decided on the best strategy for the archiving process, I would go through the work of cleaning up and uploading the entire existing archive of BCR Radio shows, organised in folders on a server. Depending on the amount of money donated to the fundraiser, we can explore public access to the archive ( which is a very expensive option so perhaps continuing with an ongoing donation model with Patreon ) or simply securing the archive online without public access if we can't raise more than 1.000euro.
Let me know if you have any questions! [email redacted]
