Connected Through Caring is a project created by Florida Atlantic University (FAU) students Kassi, Isabella, Mark, Maya, and mentor Miriam. Our mission is to offer support, motivation, and gratitude to the South Florida community during the COVID-19 pandemic.
To do this, we want to send motivating letters to the essential workers on the front lines of this pandemic and promote multi-generational conversation, all while practicing social distancing. How? Through three components: (1) a letter writing campaign, (2) a community-based pen pal program and (3) a video communication initiative.
The first two components, the letter writing campaign and pen pal program, will be conducted electronically with the collection and distribution of letters via email and an option for paper copies by request.
The third component, the video communication initiative, focuses on promoting multi-generational conversation between nursing home patients and FAU student volunteers via video calling sessions. Through this initiative, we hope that we can help alleviate stress on the elderly living in nursing home facilities during this unprecedented time in which family and friends are now restricted from visiting their loved ones. With your generosity, we can make this happen and purchase an Apple iPad, tablet stand, and cleaning supplies. With these materials, nursing home patients will be able to video call volunteers without ever having to touch the device. A staff member will handle the setting up and shutting down of the tablet, and will then sanitize the tablet as an additional preventative measure. Our goal is to raise enough money by May 25th to purchase the necessary materials and to run the project until July 1. We will then re-evaluate with the changing circumstances.
We love our South Florida community, and this is our way of showing our essential workers and the elderly how much we appreciate them! The support and generosity of our donors means so much to us -- thank you!
