History:
The BDPA National High School Computer Competition, (HSCC), was founded in 1986 by Dr. Jesse Bemley, of Washington, D.C. What started as a two-team event between Washington, D.C. and Atlanta, Ga. has grown to over 20 teams of high school students from chapters throughout the nation. It's all designed to introduce youth to the field of Information Technology, encourage them to seek higher levels of education, and groom many of them to become our next generation of IT professionals.
Goal:
The team of 9 deserving and dedicated students from schools across New York City has been training since January. Unfortunately, we don't have the funds to take them to the competition in Washington D.C. August 18-22.
Help us fund their trip to the National High school Computer Competition. The money will secure their spot in the competition, their transportation, and lodging.
What are we doing? Stepping in.
This year Teach For America continued their partnership with the New York chapter of BDPA in an effort to train and mentor their High School Computing Competition team to compete. We held a very successful tryout in February and we now have a bustling team with mostly new novice members. The students come to our National Office every Wednesday and are taught Computer Science fundamentals along with how to develop end-to-end web applications using HTML, CSS, Javascript and PHP.
What will they do? Lots of work!
The competition consists of three main parts:
Oral Exam - The entire group will participate in around robin oral competition with 5 questions from the subjects of Cyber Security, Web Development, BDPA History, and Computer History.
Written Exam - The individual team members have to complete as many of 300 questions in 15 minutes in the areas of Cyber Security, Web Development, BDPA History, and Computer History.
Programming - The students will be squestered in a room with no internet and no phones/outside contact for 7 hours during which they will complete a web application (last year they built a web app very similar to the Uber iPhone app).
Presentation - After completing the application the students present it to a judge in front of their competing teams.
