My name is Thraicie Hawkner and in 2003, my partner (in business and life) Jane and I opened Eye of Horus Metaphysical in Uptown, Minneapolis. Over the last 17 years, our little metaphysical store has been through several moves, financial insecurity, and the plethora of hardships of being a small business. The Eye of Horus survived, thrived, and became a trusted resource for the spiritually inclined in the Twin Cities.
In January 2020, we eagerly made the leap of doubling our space...and then COVID hit a few weeks later. Jane passed away after her long-time battle with cancer less than a year later. Despite all of this, our “little-shop-that-could” continues to grow.
I decided it was time to acknowledge the evolution of our business without our beloved Jane, while staying true to our identity and commitment to our community. On September 20, our store officially becomes The Eye, a name we are already called by our closest friends and colleagues.
Here’s where I’m asking for your support. As a part of the legal implications of becoming a new store with a sole owner, I’ve essentially needed to start The Eye’s bank balance at $0. As you can imagine, there are a lot of costs associated with a name change, and, although our business is thriving, we need financial support as we make this transition. Additionally, we have many exciting ideas of how we can provide even more services to our customers and the magickal community that we’d like to launch in the near future.
Here’s a breakdown of what we need support for during our transition:
- Creating, obtaining city permits, and hanging a sign with our new name and logo
- Costs for updating brochures, packaging, advertisements, webstore etc with our new name and logo
- Installation costs for a new A/C unit (If you’ve shopped with us recently, you know how critical this need is!)
- Maintenance costs for fixing our winter heating issues
- General operating costs for “keeping the lights on” for the first month of our new identity
If we reach our goal for these “critical” issues, here’s how we plan to use funds for further growth
- Launching a new podcast - Jane’s big dream was to create a podcast that highlighted our incredible magickal community. We have staff with the passion and experience to make this happen, but we need funds for purchasing equipment, creating a space that can serve as our studio, and additional staff time
- Aura photography equipment - We have customers call and ask for aura photography regularly. Purchasing our own equipment would enable us to provide this service on a daily basis
- Better ventilation in our production space - As you may have noticed, our production manager Brenna has done a brilliant job of expanding our house-made oils, kits, and other magickal tools. This means our production space is in constant use and better ventilation would make our work space more comfortable and efficient for everyone
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
