Donate one limestone block for 7 Euros and help us reconstruct the Great Aten Temple!
The ancient city of Tell el-Amarna, located 300km south of Cairo, is under permanent threat from modern building and agricultural activity. In consequence, the Amarna Project is excavating and reconstructing the city's most important ceremonial building: The Great Aten Temple .
The modern cemetery encroachment from the north and the reconstructed temple wall showing the small limestone blocks and the backfill.
Alongside our ongoing excavations on behalf of the Amarna Project, we are replacing the stones removed after the abandonment of the city with small, local limestone blocks, topped with larger ones from the famous Tura quarries near Cairo, making the building outlines visible.
The focus of the 2021 Autumn season is the continued reconstruction of the north wall of the long stone temple, topping the small limestone blocks in the foundation trench with talatat-sized limestone blocks (see update from the 14 August 2021).
Visitors at the site, regarding reconstructed buildings, and some ongoing reconstruction work to the south.
A personalised block, ready to become part of the temple reconstruction.
You can currently help us by donating one limestone block for 7 Euros (or more), which will carry your name or the inscription of your choice. Thus, you will become a part of the ancient city and help to protect one of the most important buildings of Ancient Egypt.
