Be Terra and Troy's Village

Hi, my name is Melanie and I am fundraising for Terra and her son. Terra is a loving and nurturing Mom to 7-year-old Troy. She has been a single parent most of Troy's life, caring for him without receiving any court-ordered child support in an effort to nurture a healthy co-parenting relationship. Over the years, Terra has worked hard to keep Troy connected to his father and his father's family because she knows that having two involved parents and family who love him is in Troy's best interest.

Several months ago, Troy's father sued Terra for full custody and unfortunately, the months of court battles have taken their toll. Terra initially had a lawyer, but soon ran out of resources and has been representing herself, spending hours combing through family law textbooks and organizing required documents to submit etc. The sad reality that is becoming clear is that our legal system is not designed for a citizen to be able to represent themselves and that for Terra to continue parenting her son, she is going to need our help.

The resources will be used to help her to get legal representation and to comply with all of the requirements of the court during this time while the other party uses continuances and delays. Terra's financial resources have been drained, but not her resolve or her dedication to her son. Together we can all help to level the playing field and make sure that the court can come to a decision based on what is in Troy's best interest, rather than on whose family has more money for lawyers. This is one example of how it really does take a village to raise a child.
