Beach Wheelchairs Project - Memoriam Pip Briggs

We would like to posthumously recognise a beloved staff member who worked with May Shaw for over 6 years, Pip Briggs. Pip tragically died in a car accident on the 6th May 2022. Pip had recently resigned from May Shaw and was moving her family to Campbell Town.

Whilst at May Shaw, Pip was a carer before joining our Leisure & Lifestyle team. Pip was a vibrant, loving, caring and fun member of May Shaw’s team. The residents loved her and appreciated the care and focus she had on meeting all their individual needs.

A major focus for Pip had been how to get the residents to the beach. Pip worked tirelessly on applications for beach wheelchairs to be purchased to enable non-ambulant residents to be able to enjoy our beautiful Schouten Beach in Swansea. This proposal included the Glamorgan Spring Bay Council providing a concrete path to enable our staff and residents to gain access to this beach via beach wheelchairs.

To assist with improving beach access in Swansea for disabled and mobility challenged community residents and visitors. We would repurpose an access by concreting a path and putting in rails so there is an area that wheelchairs are able to access Schouten Beach. We would purchase Beach Wheelchairs which will be stored and maintained by May Shaw Health Centre that can be utilised to get beach access, and enjoy the beach for swimming and recreational purposes. An option for visitors and the wider community to utilise these will also be available. Signage will be at the beach with a QR code link to explain how visitors or other community can book the wheelchair and an online booking form.
