My name is Alex, I am working this summer as the new Environmental Sustainability Intern at camp. To help camp reduce our carbon footprint and teach about sustainable methods of food production, we are working to establish a camp Gardening and Compost program.
The benefits are numerous:
1) Saves camp money by avoiding food purchases,
2) Demonstrates sustainable agriculture methods,
3) Decreases waste sent to landfills by composting,
4) Provides better tasting & more nutritious food,
5) Creates an immersive teaching environment,
6) Provides future fundraising opportunities through produce & herb sales.
I am working to fund this program by my self. Donations will go directly to construct our raised garden beds and compost bins and to purchase soil, seeds and other gardening tools. All labor, from construction and planting, to weeding, composting, mulching and harvesting will be done by volunteers or camp staff. We will begin construction in April and planting soon after, so your support now is needed more than ever!
This is a long-term investment in camp: Our investment today will save camp anywhere from $200-$500 a year in savings from food purchases and garbage processing. It will also give many of the thousands of scouts who visit camp each summer their first experience working with gardening and composting.
On a personal note, this project has already involved more than 30 hours of research and planning, and by time camp starts I will likely have spent 200 hours or more planning, building and planting.
