The rotting skin spreading down his back.

Update: Bear has started treatment and has gone through 5 procedures.

I asked the veterinarian to take pictures of his open wound, so that I can monitor the progression of Bear’s healing. I am adding them at the very bottom of this story for full transparnecy. PLEASE DO NOT SCROLL TO THE VERY IF YOU CANNOT TAKE IT. The pictures are very triggering and graphic. (I will insert another warning toward the end of the story. Just before you get to the pictures.

The most unimaginable nightmare turned into reality last week. Our dear “Bear” was maliciously severely burned with a torch lighter. A minor, 9 YEARS OLD, neighbor entered my backyard on several different occasions and attempted to set my dog on fire. My entire family is devastated. My two sons, torn! My community is in a state of shock. Everyone loves and knows Bear. He is the sweetest dog ever. So much so, that he did not fight back to protect himself or harm the person who was callously torturing him.

My son and I took Bear to the emergency vet and were given terrible news. We were told that Bear’s injuries are worse than expected. He sustained third degree burns that are so bad that they he began to form eschars, which is dead skin and dead secretions. Eschars can lead to chronic infection, possibly leading to sepsis and death.

Time is of the essence. Bear may only have a few days left to live if not treated and we are desperately praying for a miracle.

Bear is home now and resting. His pain is being managed with medication and he is currently on antibiotics to help reduce the infection. The cost for his starter medications was $420 plus $135 for the visit.

The Emergency Vet quoted $5,000 to stabilize and treat him for 2 days during that weekend. They also estimated that Bear’s surgery could cost over $10,900.

**I have quickly found out that was an understatement. His presiding vet stated he needs treatment for 2-3 months. For now he needs daily bandage changes a debridements. Based on our budget he can only get his bandages changes every 2-3 days. The cost for that can be anywhere between $400-$1200 depending on what is required each time. A big driver of that cost is the need for bear to be administered anesthesia to go to sleep because he is nervous and will not let the vet touch his wounds. Also, his vet is closed on the weekends, so we have to find anyone that will take him and pay the price they name.*

I asked the veterinarian to take pictures so that I can monitor the progression of Bear’s healing. I am adding them at the very bottom of this story. PLEASE DO NOT SCROLL TO THE END IF YOU CANNOT TAKE IT. The pictures are very triggering and graphic.

If you find it in your heart to donate please know that it is deeply appreciated. Any amount given will help.

We are also seeking resources to help with Bear’s care. If you know any Vet that is willing to help please reach out to me.

Please help Bear by sharing this fundraiser with your family and friends.

Thank you and God Bless!
