Talu Ein Dyled i'r Beasleys

Am wyth mlynedd fe wrthododd y Beasleys ymateb i lythyron treth Saesneg gan fynnu bod un Cymraeg yn cyrraedd eu bwthyn yn Yr Allt, Llangennech. Fe gollon nhw eu heiddo i’r beilïaid ar ôl ymddangos gerbron y llys ddwsin o weithiau a manteisio ar y cyfle i fynnu gwrandawiad llys trwy gyfrwng y Gymraeg. Fe barhaodd ymgyrch y Beasleys am wyth mlynedd tan iddynt dderbyn llythyr treth dwyieithog yn 1960.
Roedd eu safiad yn ysbrydoliaeth ac yn gychwyn ar ddegawdau o ymgyrchu a llu o ymgyrchwyr dros ein hiaith a’i statws yn y Gymru Fodern.
Mae’r tŷ yn prysur ddirywio ar ôl iddo fod yn wag am ddegawd a mwy. Nawr yw’r amser i achub y safle hanesyddol ar gyfer y dyfodol gan greu canolfan sy’n dathlu cyfraniad aruthrol Trefor ac Eileen tuag at barhad yr iaith Gymraeg a’i statws.
Rydym ni ym Menter Cwm Gwendraeth Elli yn bwriadu prynu’r tŷ, ei adnewyddu a chreu canolfan treftadaeth ar y safle, a fydd o fudd i’r gymuned leol a hefyd i’r genedl gyfan. Gofynnwn yn garedig am unrhyw gyfraniad tuag at y cam cyntaf, sef prynu’r safle, gyda’r weledigaeth o ddatblygu canolfan iaith a threftadaeth a fydd yn anrhydeddu safiad y Beasleys a’u haberth.

----

For eight years the Beasleys refused to respond to an English only district tax demand, demanding that a Welsh one arrive at their cottage in yr Allt, Llangennech. They lost many of their belongings to the bailiffs after appearing before the court a dozen times, each time taking advantage of the opportunity to demand a court hearing through the medium of Welsh. The Beasleys' campaign continued for eight years until they received a bilingual tax demand in 1960.
Their stance was an inspiration and started decades of campaigning for the language and its status within Modern Wales.
The house is rapidly deteriorating after being empty for a decade or more. Now is the time to save this historic site for the future by creating a centre that celebrates the tremendous contribution of Trefor and Eileen towards the continuation of the Welsh language and its status.
We at Menter Cwm Gwendraeth Elli plan to buy the house, renovate it and create a heritage centre on the site, which will benefit the local community and also the nation as a whole. We kindly ask for any contribution towards the first stage, which is to buy the site, with the vision of developing a language and heritage centre which will honour the Beasleys' stance and their sacrifice.
