We will be closing down this Gofundme. It’s been an incredible experience to receive so much support, and to be clear, your donations undoubtedly saved lives. Austin Mutual Aid, in partnership with several other groups and many individuals, housed 476+ unhoused neighbors during the frigid days of the storm at 28 different hotels, costing hundreds of thousands of dollars in bookings. The city of Austin never came through with any amount of financial support. The majority of the hotel rooms were booked with individual volunteer credit cards, none of whom would have been able to afford the many thousands of dollars that came due. But with your donations we were able to reimburse them. The remaining $70k was booked by the incredible organization Survive to Thrive, which we also reimbursed from the funds raised in this campaign.
Austin Mutual Aid worked with several organizations, most specifically the network of groups called ATX Camp Support, to provide 2-3 meals a day to the 476+ unhoused neighbors at the hotels for an average stay of 2 weeks. Many of these hotels were owned and run by immigrant families that went above and beyond to support the guests, allowing, at times, for us to turn their lobbies into make-shift community centers, with a variety of social support, resources, bus passes, phones, music, workshops and many other types of aid with the help of your donations. Many unhoused people got involved with the effort and took part in organizing this wrap around support.
We did not include photos of the hotels, the activities or the residents for a variety of reasons, ranging from needing to keep their locations safe as well as respecting their privacy.
You can always support us financially through Venmo: @AustinMutualAid (a "business account"), but as we close down this Gofundme we want to direct your attention to some incredible local organizations that could use your support!
