Bec runs Birmingham Half Marathon for Compton Hospice
If you know me, you’ll know that running (or indeed any form of exercise) is not my thing. However, a really difficult time late last year prompted me to dig out some trainers and start this journey to the Birmingham Half, a pretty much inconceivable goal for someone who found ‘couch to 5k’ an unsustainable struggle.
It was while sitting beside my absolute superhero of a grandad during the final days of his life that I decided to challenge myself. We were in Compton Hospice, an incredible facility which also served as home for my mum and aunt as they sat bedside vigil with Grandad until his death. The staff were amazing, helping us to create wonderful memories with Grandad, patiently listening to stories of his life, laughing with us and providing endless cups of tea.
This was sadly not our first experience at Compton as a family- they also cared for my much-loved Auntie San a few years ago. Our similarly brilliant experience back then played a part in my career-long interest in Palliative Care, opening my eyes to the difference it can make.
Many people are not aware that hospices only receive partial government funding, relying on donations for the majority of their running costs. I would be so grateful if you could donate anything you’re able to support this incredible cause and the amazing people at Compton who bring light in the darkest times.
