A SAFE PLACE TO CALL HOME FOR KYRA AND OTHER YOUNG PEOPLE LIKE HER
"I came into the care of the local authority at the age of 13. I needed a Safe Place to Call Home and lots of support. Taking Positive Steps were able to provide this for me. I'm safe at home until I'm able to do it by myself." Kyra 17 years old.
"I'm 15, I have a mentor provided by Taking Positive Steps. I meet with him twice a week. He was there when I needed someone to talk to but also someone who could understand the journey and why I was behaving in a not so nice way. I'm looking forward to the future if I can stay out of trouble."
Mick 15 years old.
Help Taking Positive Steps engage our young people in every part of their journey. Preventing exclusions, grooming and children caught up on the county lines. Our children are being excluded from school and left to the dangers of the street.
Taking positive steps is actively out in the community caring for and engaging with children who are vulnerable and in need of our help. Often schools are not equipped to deal with students, social workers are not able to provide the instant and ongoing care needed, and police are missing opportunities to prevent young deaths. We need Taking Positive Steps to provide a holistic approach to saving children from being caught up in the dangers of the streets. Children as young as 10 are being groomed and found on the county lines. This is a problem that affects us all, from small towns to big cities, crime is praying on vulnerable young people and it has to stop.
Each exclusion cost £20,000 instead of £8,000 per year to remain in education.
Each murder costs £1.8 million to investigate from start to finish. This does not include the mental health impact or trauma experienced by the community.
35,000 children are on the books of the Children and Adolescent Mental health Services at a cost of £1,788 per individual.
There are over 10,000 children and young people registered on the books of the national referral mechanism. Children and young people are over populated in the youth justice system, often incarcerated for a crime committed. However the criminal justice system does not address the addiction that caused this crime, therefore incarceration can be more detrimental to the economy.
As an organisation we are addressing the impacts of grooming, County-lines and serious youth violence within our community by providing community outreach engagement, crime diversion and emergency long term respite placement in a safe place to call home where individuals can receive wraparound services to deal with social life skills, family challenges and criminal activities.
With your help Taking Positive Steps can reach more children before its too late.
They will provide mentors in schools to help prevent exclusions and grooming within the school system
Expand their already piloted mentor program which operates now in Enfield and Haringey, they have mentors walking the streets at the end of school engaging with children directly and being active in the community. With funding this could then be rolled out in the 5 Trident boroughs to address all communities suffering from the effects of violent crime.
Taking Positive Steps goes out and rescues children that have gone missing and are being kept captive on the county lines. We are in need of more workers with this skillset to tackle these difficult moments. With funding they can rescue more children and give more families the help they need in the face of adversity.
Provide a safe space to call home. Too often children who have been rescued from the county lines and reunited with their families are then found back on the streets in a very short space of time, trying to combat the power of organised crime is incredibly difficult and can only be addressed with longevity and persistence. Taking Positive Steps want to create a house where they can rehabilitate children for a longer period of time giving them a chance at a new life and providing 24 hour protection for those in danger.
There is no other organisation providing this level of hands on care and wraparound approach to these ongoing problems.
Each new mentor will be trained by Claudine Duberry and her team giving each individual the opportunity to really make a difference in the community.
Please give generously and help give our children the protection they deserve.
