Becky Sule Memorial Fund

Tax deductible
On February 18th 2024, the world lost Becky Sule to a tragic bus accident. Becky was a beloved member of the Bright Minds team, having helped launch Bright Minds in its first years as a nonprofit. If Bright Minds was a joyful, fun place to work, it was in large part due to Becky. Even people who only met her once commented on her contagious laughter and the energy she radiated. Becky was deeply kind. She dedicated her life to serving her community and gave of herself with all her heart. When one of our scholarship recipients gave birth, she even offered to raise the child so the student could continue her education.

As Bright Minds Scholarship Coordinator, Becky personally enrolled hundreds of out-of-school girls back in school and worked closely with each student to overcome barriers to continuing their education. She was deeply committed to the girls she mentored and championed a Young Mothers Support Group, providing pregnant adolescents with access to prenatal care and hospital births. She found great joy in helping these young women give birth to healthy babies, and she always loved holding the newborn child. In a society where family planning is all but inaccessible, Becky fought to ensure that every young mother who wanted it had access to implant contraception. She also coordinated our Pen Pal Program, working closely with teachers at Lipman Middle School and other schools in the U.S. to foster cross-cultural friendships between students in the U.S. and Nigeria.

It is impossible to imagine Bright Minds without Becky. She liked to say that she planned to work for Bright Minds into old age.

Becky was the sole provider for her parents, both of whom have chronic health conditions, and was also supporting her elder brother through university. Donations received in her memory will be divided equally to provide financial assistance to her family and to expand the Young Mothers Support Group that she championed. All donations will be channeled directly to Bright Minds through our fiscal sponsor Philanthropic Ventures Foundation, and we will ensure the funds are allocated accordingly.

Our thoughts are with Becky's family during this difficult time. She will live on in our hearts and in the countless lives she touched.
