Get Bec to World Transplant Games!

This fundraising campaign has been put together to greatly assist a truly inspirational young lady I’m so very lucky to call a good friend.

I first met Bec a few years ago working together at the Royal Children’s Hospital. Instantly we gelled as she sucked me in with her infectious laughter, kind spirit and bubbly personality.
Bec always has a supportive ear to lend me & always happy to accompany me to Friday night drinks after a stressful week at work ;o)
I soon learnt that behind that beautiful big smile & sparkling blue eyes was a long history of somewhat pain.

At the spunky age of 6yo Bec fell unwell. Her family soon learnt that she was diagnosed with a rare cardiac condition called Left Ventricular non compaction cardio myopathy. The reality her family faced is that Bec was in end stage heart failure & the only option for their beautiful blonde haired, bright eyed girl was a heart transplant.

For those of you that are unaware, unfortunately this is not a solution and defiantly no easy task. The road ahead was to be long, scary and full of uncertainty. Would they find her a match? Would her body reject it? What difference would this make to her quality or quantity of life?

Despite all the uncertainty Bec’s family packed up their life in the northern territory and made the trek down to Melbourne where she was worked up and eventually put on the waitlist for a new heart.

Two days after her seventh birthday Bec received a birthday gift like no other – a new heart.

There is no doubt how difficult the hours, days, weeks, months & years ahead would be for Bec and her family. Hospital stays and appointments, medications, tests, blood, sweat and many, many tears…

Fast forward 17 years to the amazing human being who I have grown to adore.

It doesn’t surprise me that this strong young woman has beaten all odds and kept fighting through all expectations. For those of you who are unaware, the average life expectancy of a heart transplant is 10-15 years.

Each and every day I see Bec I’m excited to hear about her new little adventures and always inspired at how she has fills & manages her life with work, university, young adult mentorship & not to mention a very busy social life.

Several weeks ago she casually advised me that she was heading away in a few months as she “kinda like got into the world transplant games”. “Umm what do you mean you kinda got in?” “Yeah like, I’m competing. I’m in the Australian cycling and badminton team! I’m going to Spain!”

What Bec was modestly advising me is that the world transplant games selected Bec to be part of the Australian team as she was considered at a competitive level. This also means she was granted the opportunity to train at the Australian Institute of Sport with other athletes in preparation for the games.

The World Transplant Games is a biannual international event that brings together athletes from all over the world who have received a gift of organ transplantation to celebrate their second chance at life.

Some of you reading this struggle to put on your runners and walk to the letter box, and yet here is our girl, putting all of health concerns to the side and pushing her little body to its full potential.

What this means is that Bec has had to endure a gruelling schedule of coaching, training and keeping to a tight nutrition plan in preparation to compete.

Bec has embedded in her head that she wants to have the best possible outcome in her events and so is full steam ahead for a win. In my eyes, Bec is a winner already!

Unfortunately, the other challenge in getting to the games is the financial burden this has placed on Bec. Nothing is covered and there is no sponsorship available for athletes to attend and compete in the games. Bec is now faced dealing with costs associated with registration fees, team uniforms, flights, travel insurance, not to mention all the cost that has gone into coaching and training.

Bec’s health is currently impeccable. The future of her health is unknown. If you are reading this I know that you share the love & inspiration for this amazing soul. Your love and support is greatly appreciated! You should know that Bec would be so overwhelmed knowing that you have taken the time to read this let alone making a donation to help support a dream she has worked so hard towards. Show your support for this fantastic goal and help me help Bec get to the games!
Don't delay... the countdown is on... the games start on the 25th of June!!!!!!
