Build a Legal Fund for Property Guardians
Donation protected
Earlier this year, property guardians at locations across London were informed by the managing company that their rents (licence fees) we set to double with just a few weeks' notice. In one example, a property guardian was asked to pay an increased fee from £475 a month to more than £800 per month. The management company in question claims to act with integrity and for the creation of social good. This company are now taking property guardians who could not afford to pay these new prices to court. We are hoping to establish a legal fund to support the costs these property guardians will face trying to defend themselves from doubling rents. It has been largely accepted that property guardians accept fewer rights than tenants in return for reduced living costs. However, these guardianships erode the rights of all renters - adding further to the precarity of the most vulnerable in society. Property guardian companies have been able to exploit individuals in a broken housing system and we want to be able to take strong message to the courts which says enough is enough. The fund will support individuals to pay their legal costs and support a strong legal defence in court.
The priorities of this fund are to:
1. Support guardians in court this month with their legal costs where necessary
2. Support guardians in the case that they become obliged to pay the legal costs of the guardian company they are standing against
3. To develop a fund that can be used support any legal costs of guardians standing against their property guardianship company in the future
