My life has been leading up to this . . . seriously!
My first fully usable computer (and Mac) was an Apple Lisa running MacWorks Plus II. The Lisa was the catalyst for my becoming a computer historian and I'm a lifetime enthusiast. I'm also a big fan of documentaries, so... it's my job to make this one. Buy the movie and help make it better! DVD purchasers will receive the digital download at the same time as the digital-only purchasers.
"Before Macintosh: The Apple Lisa" is an exciting new feature-length (to be about 100 minutes) documentary that explores the history, people, technology, stories and industry influence of this lesser-known personal computer. The film profiles important individuals involved in the creation of the computer, plus its life after cancellation, both as an entry-level Macintosh compatible and as a collectible.
The work of Douglas Engelbart and his team, plus advances from the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) with their Alto and Star workstations were the progenitors of the Graphical User Interface (GUI), but the Apple Lisa stands as the clear foundation for what we all use today -- Macintosh -- Windows -- iOS -- Android.
This is the planned content breakdown:
· 40% of the film for the Lisa while at Apple (creation, development, release, re-badging, cancellation, OS specifics, etc.)
· 30% of the film for after Apple (SunRemarketing, Sigma Seven Systems, DaFax, LisaEM, Vintage Micros, etc.)
· 25% of the film for enthusiasts/collectors
· 5% of the film for misc.
"Before Macintosh: The Apple Lisa" is a celebration of the computer that really changed the way we used personal computers; it started the revolution!
After a successful Kickstarter, and some extra funds from Indiegogo, all of the interviews/travel have now been completed. Some funds have been saved for final production and DVD creation, but it certainly doesn't hurt to have extra money on-hand for anything else needed. Two things we would like to add are original music and some animation.
