Belfast Marathon for Brainwaves
On the 4th of May, a team of 5 (Sean McKinley, Patrick Mitchell, Ryan O'Dea, Neil Shannon and Malachy McIvor) will be running the Belfast Marathon Team Relay. All money raised will be donated towards Brainwaves NI.
Brainwaves NI are the only brain tumour research and support group in NI. They provide support to brain tumour patients, their families, carers, and raise awareness. They also fund vital research at the Patrick G Johnston Centre for Cancer Research, Queen’s University Belfast, and have donated over £500k in recent years. In 2016, only 1.9% of £580 million spent by the UK government and largest cancer research charities was spent on brain tumours. This is despite brain tumours reducing life expectancy by on average 27 years – the highest of any cancer.
Brainwaves are currently funding Malachy's PhD project investigating a new form of radiotherapy for brain tumour treatment. The funds raised will allow Brainwaves to support future brain tumour research projects at QUB and help support local brain tumour patients.
Patrick and Ryan's recently lost their dear uncle, John Coleman, after he passed away following a battle with brain cancer. Malachy's mother has been battling a brain tumour for over 15 years. The 5 of us would greatly appreciate any donation made to this great cause.
Thank you
