Our beautiful 11 year old daughter Bella is suffering with severe anorexia. She is getting amazing treatement at a treatment centre in Utah, but the treatment is not cheap (around $1100/day) and will likely take 6-9 months. We have been totally overwhelmed by the generosity from people all over the world but funds are being exhausted fast with doctors bills, labs and medicine not included in the treatment costs.
Bella is determined to beat this and is fighting hard, but we've got a long and tough road ahead. She was diagnosed in March last year and ever since, we've battled this, trying everything to help her. She was hospitilised in January this year and spent 4 months in a hospital where they completely missmanaged her treatment and progressively made it harder for her physically and mentally to the point where we had no option but to look for alternatives. Her physical condition had deteriorated to a point where she was constantly facing the threat of dying.
Through our journey we've been blessed to have met the most incredible people that have led us to where she is today. She was admitted on the 9 May to the most amazing clinic where trained proffessionals will take care of her and help her heal. They understand this disease. But we have to leave our little girl thousands of kilometres away, for as long as 3-4 months until we have our first visit, depending on how she does, something no mum (or dad) should ever have to do.
We live in South Africa. Spare a thought for my beautiful wife who has had so much courage, each minute of every day as she fights for Bella's life. For the first time we have a sense of relief knowing that she's in the right place.
Kath and Bella are my heroes, as are Josh and Laurian who have been so brave and strong for Bella. We will change the way things are done in South Africa, we have to be the catalyst that makes this happen. Too many kids suffer with this disease and cannot get the help they deserve. There is no treatement for kids under the age of 14. While this will help Bella in the short term we are determined to continue to actively raise funds and awareness for this campaign to do something about it, it is not acceptable to let our kids suffer like they're forced to do.
