Beloved Tidewater Area Bookstore Forced to Move
Donation protected
Jeannie's Used Books opened in 2000, the charge led by Jeannie Hunt. It all began with her own love of books, from her own collection. Over the years she watched her children and grandchildren grow in and around her store as well as others she would over time take under her wing. She is a multiple time Best Of Portsmouth winner and has a loyal client base. She has not raised her prices in 22 years, not even the 50 cent soda cans!
On April 12th she was notified that she would be expected to relocate by May 31st. After appealing this, she has been given until September to have everything moved out and cleaned up. She has over 250,000 books to move, not to mention all the shelving and other structures and appliances she's put into her store.
Jeannie and her store have been an asset to the local community. She's provided book donations to West Norfolk First Baptist, Tidewater Youth Services Foundation, Congregation Beth El (Norfolk), many teachers from different school systems in the area, multiple jails and small charities that have reached out to her over time and more. She and her husband also brought back the Santa House at Midtown for 5 years, bringing some joy through nostalgia for the older generations and giving the younger new memories (and books and toys, not to mention a picture with Santa!)
Any help to go towards moving, any potential repairs and other related expenses would be so appreciated!
