BELT BUDDIES was created by Chelsea Marks to help post operative breast cancer patients in her community. Working closely with Mollie Sugarman and the doctors at NY Breast Reconstruction Associates, she came upon this idea to give comfort in a time when comfort is sorely needed....post mastectomy. They are simply...a cushioned seatbelt cover! These belts take the weight off a seatbelt pressing into the tender skin of a patient who has been thru a very painful time, both mentally and physically. When interviewed about this Chelsea replied
"My mom was diagnosed 6 years ago and I have been dying my hair pink since that time. I needed to show more support for this cause, Mom is the 7th family member to be diagnosed, as well as close family friends. Mom won her battle, not all others were as lucky. Seeing her go through a double mastectomy and the care that was needed after...the pain of putting on a seatbelt, doing simple things made me think of what I could do to help in the short term."
Thus Belt Buddies was born.
These belts will be handed out free of charge to post mastectomy patients through NY Breast Reconstruction Associates. Anything that can be done to lessen the discomfort during these trying times is paramount. And we are here to help.
Chelsea is a 22 year old who is legally blind and has a rare form or Muscular Dystrophy. She will be graduating from Stony Brook University in 2017 with a degree in Biomedical Engineering. She will be pursuing her PhD in cancer biology. Her goal is to be part of a team to find new treatments for breast cancer. The fight continues......
