Belvedere Needs Surgery

Belvedere came to Oasis on October 31, 2015. He was a former athlete, having been campaigned so hard in his life that he developed "kissing spine" which causes debilitating pain whenever any weight is placed on his back. He became dangerous to ride. His former owner purchased him back when she discovered his current owner was taking him to the auction; but realizing she could not keep him, contacted Oasis for assistance. He is a permanent resident of Oasis, and at 26 years old, runs happily with his buddy Magic in the green pastures at Foster Mom's farm.

Very recently Belvedere was diagnosed with “Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis" (EOTRH), a dental disease that 
occurs in older horses when their body reabsorbs the bone and tissue surrounding the incisor (and sometimes canine) roots. As a horse loses more and more of his gums, feed accumulates and paves the way for infection. This can loosen his teeth, make them weak, and eventually break.  It was determined that he has 2 broken teeth, his front teeth have separated, another one is cracked and another tooth's roots are being reabsorbed.  Thankfully, he is still eating well; however, this progressive disease can become life threatening if/when infection sets in and travels into his blood stream or bones.  He needs extensive dental work to save his life.  


The Oasis Animal Sanctuary, an 18 year old non-profit animal welfare agency in Franklinville, NJ is trying to raise $2,000 for this dental work that needs to be done in a large animal hospital in central Jersey.  This amount will cover the cost of transportation, the dental procedure, and pain  medication he will need for a few days, and a follow up vet visit at home.  Thankfully this is an out-patient procedure and he should be able to come home   the same day, provided all goes well.
