Benedetta Corre Contro La SLA - Benedetta Runs Against ALS

(English below) Il 12 maggio 2024 correrò la Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon a nome di mio zio Franco e per raccogliere fondi per la cura della SLA.

Tutti i soldi che raccoglierò andranno direttamente all’Associazione Luca Coscioni (https://www.associazionelucacoscioni.it). La vita di Luca è stata segnata dalla sclerosi laterale amiotrofica (SLA): è mancato all’età di 38 anni e da allora la sua associazione si è impegnata a lottare a favore delle persone affette da malattie come la SLA. Corro per Franco, a cui è stata diagnosticata la SLA, e per tutti coloro che condividono le sofferenze di questa terribile condizione.

È stato grazie a Franco che ho iniziato a correre nel 2017. Stavo facendo un dottorato di ricerca in un’università americana ed ero ingrassata a causa della vita sedentaria che spesso conducono i dottorandi: sempre chiusi in biblioteca senza fare molta attività fisica. Quell’estate tornai in Italia per fare ricerca e per convertirmi ad uno stile di vita più sano. Mio zio mi ha incoraggiato a iniziare a correre e mi ha accompagnato nei miei primi passi.

Non avevo mai corso prima. All’inizio è stato davvero difficile. Dopo un paio di chilometri, sudavo, ansimavo e tremavo. Era terribile. Mio zio è stato molto paziente, correndo al mio fianco e incoraggiandomi a perseverare. Presto ho iniziato ad amare questo sport. Franco era il mio allenatore e compagno di corsa preferito. Ogni volta che potevo, mi allenavo con lui. Abbiamo corso per tutta Roma, nei suoi bellissimi parchi, lungo il fiume Tevere e davanti agli splendidi monumenti. Le prime gare che ho corso – la mezza maratona dei Castelli Romani, la mezza maratona Roma-Ostia e la maratona di Roma – sono state tutte grazie all’incoraggiamento di mio zio. Alla fine correva meno di me, preferendo distanze più brevi, ma accompagnandomi comunque in bicicletta. Insieme abbiamo corso la bellissima “Corsa dei Santi” di 10 km che attraversa il centro di Roma e arriva al Vaticano. È stata un’esperienza indimenticabile.

Due anni fa, mio zio ha iniziato ad avere difficoltà a camminare. Non riuscivamo a capire come una persona così in forma e attiva potesse avere un simile problema. Dopo aver consultato diversi medici, ricevette una terribile diagnosi: SLA. All’inizio mi rifiutavo di crederci: la crudeltà e il dolore di questa malattia, la sua ingiustizia. Mio zio ora è bloccato su una sedia a rotelle e la sua salute sta progressivamente peggiorando, con poche speranze di sollievo.

Le sofferenze di Franco hanno aperto la mia mente e il mio cuore ai tanti che condividono questa malattia, per la quale non esiste ancora una cura. Piuttosto che sentirmi impotente, voglio fare tutto il possibile per aiutare le persone come mio zio, raccogliendo fondi per aiutare i ricercatori a sconfiggere questa malattia. Mi sostiene la consapevolezza che sono state trovate cure per malattie che un tempo sembravano imbattibili. Corro per sconfiggere la SLA, per sconfiggere tutte le forme di malattia del motoneurone e per dimostrare a Franco che non mi arrenderò mai per lui.

I am running the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon on 12 May 2024 in the name of my uncle, Franco, and to raise funds for a cure to ALS.

All the money I raise will go directly to the Associazione Luca Coscioni (https://www.associazionelucacoscioni.it). Luca’s life was marked by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS): he passed away at the age of 38 and his association has since been invested in fighting for people affected by diseases such as ALS. I am running for Franco, who has been diagnosed with ALS, and for all those who share the sufferings of this terrible condition.

It was thanks to Franco that I started running in 2017. I was doing a PhD in an American university and had gained some weight because of the sedentary life that graduate students often lead: always stuck in the library without much physical activity. That summer, I came back to Italy for research and to embrace a healthier lifestyle. My uncle encouraged me to pick up running and accompanied me on my first steps.

I had never run before. In the beginning, it was terribly hard. After a couple of kilometers, I would be sweating and panting and shaking. It felt terrible. My uncle was very patient, running alongside me and encouraging me to persevere. I soon grew to love the sport. Franco was my favourite coach and running partner. Whenever I could, I trained with him. We ran all over Rome, in its beautiful parks, alongside the river Tiber, and past the stunning monuments. The first races I ran—the half marathon of the “Castelli Romani”, the Rome-Ostia half marathon, and the Rome marathon—were all thanks to my uncle’s encouragement. In the end, he was running less than me, preferring shorter distances, but still accompanying me on his bicycle. Together, we did the beautiful 10k “Corsa dei Santi” that crosses Rome city center and arrives at the Vatican. It was an unforgettable experience.

Two years ago, my uncle started to have trouble walking. We could not understand how such a fit, active person could have such a problem. After seeing several doctors, he received an awful diagnosis: ALS. At first, I refused to believe it: the cruelty and pain of this disease, the unfairness of it. My uncle is now bound to a wheelchair, and his health is progressively deteriorating, with little hope of relief.

Franco’s sufferings have opened my mind and my heart to the many who share this illness—one that does not yet have a cure. Rather than feel helpless, I want to do everything I can to help people like my uncle, by raising funds to help researchers defeat this disease. I’m sustained by the knowledge that cures have been found for diseases that once seemed unbeatable. I’m running to beat ALS, to beat all forms of Motor Neuron Diseases, and to show Franco that I’ll never give up on him.
