Benefit for family of Deputy Byrd
Donation protected
Our team at Back The Blue NC, Inc. is saddened to report that Wake County Deputy Ned Byrd was shot and killed late last night while on duty. Fellow Deputies discovered him early this morning along Battle Bridge Road in Knightdale, NC, when contact could not be made with him by dispatch.
Sheriff Gerald Baker of the Wake County Sheriff's Office stated that a series of calls on Thursday evening brought Deputy Byrd and his K9 partner to the area. However, it is now unknown what led to the shooting and who the suspect is. Byrd did not radio for help after he was shot and was only discovered after fellow Deputies decided to check on his welfare after he did not respond to calls on the radio. Deputy Byrd's K9 partner was found still inside the vehicle.
Deputy Byrd had served the Wake County Sheriff's Office as a Deputy for approximately five years, and before that had worked as a Detention Officer in Wake County.
Sheriff Baker described Deputy Byrd as "very dedicated and committed" and stated, "he loves serving people and protecting his county... He was always in a good mood in spirits."
This fundraiser has been established to help support the surviving family members of Deputy Byrd during this tragic time, with 100% of proceeds going to the family.
Rest easy Deputy Byrd, and thank you for your service to Wake County.
