In April of 2016 Tom had a successful double lung transplant at the Cleveland Clinic. His transplant has given the opportunity to watch his youngest daughter get married, enjoyed the birth of 2 more grandchildren making a total of 5 grandchildren that he adores. He was able to live life to the fullest and was eternally grateful to donor number 23. One of his greatest passions is playing Bass guitar with the band Tuff Luck. in the spring of 2020, during the pandemic, he has been stricken with yet another incurable lung disease caused by his body rejecting these lungs. The Cleveland Clinic has begun and expedited the testing process to get Tom on the donor list as this is such a rapidly growing disease affecting his lung function. Along with this comes numerous trips to the Cleveland Clinic where his family will need overnight accommodations as the clinic is 6 hours away. There is also the possibility of a Mercy flight at the time his potential new lungs become available. The approximate cost of that alone could be $12,000. After the transplant Tom and his caretaker must stay within close proximity to the Clinic for several months for medical observation. Also, due to the high doses of anti-rejection medications from his first transplant, his kidneys are already compromised which offers a potential of a future kidney transplant.
