Benefit to Help Jeff Byrd

Hello Folks, we are Jerry and Kathy Wills... We are requesting your help for a very special man, Jeff Byrd.

Approximately two years ago Jeff lost his legs. They had to be amputated above the knee because of a severe bacterial infection. While conducting dolphin research in Florida Jeff rode out a hurricane in a shelter. When he emerged there was no power and to get to safety Jeff waded through heavily polluted, stagnant water. 

A dangerous bacteria lived in this water and embedded itself into Jeffs lower legs. Over the course of a few years treatments did nothing to fend off the bacteria. Ultimately, Jeff faced a terrible choice. Either lose his legs or die. May 2015 Jeff was rushed to the hospital near death and comatose. When he regained consciousness he discovered the amputation that had saved his life.

Jeff went to live in a house used by his employees. He was assured he could stay there for however long was needed to recover. But, within a few months after arriving, the company he had worked for decided to stop paying him. 

Just a week ago Jeff was given an Eviction Order. He has been given until April 15th to leave. It is a tall order… Jeff has no funds, and no way to pack and move himself. Of course, he has nowhere to go.

Kathy and I are ready to help Jeff move to Arizona. Unfortunately, Jeff has no funds of his own. Kathy and I have a small savings set aside, but it isn't anywhere near enough.

And so, we have started this Go Fund Me page in the hopes our friends, family, and others who care might lend a helping hand.

As of March 23rd we have raised $580. However, we need to raise a total of $10,000 by April 10th if we are going to avert this situation. From our best guess, this is the magic number that covers all the bases for Jeff. 

The funds will exclusively be used to rent a moving truck (Jerry will drive it), fuel and food during the move, renting a new home suitable for a man in a wheelchair, utilities and deposits, and for whatever Jeff needs once he is in his new home. If there is anything left over it will be deposited into Jeff’s bank account to cover food, or whatever he needs until his disability checks arrive.

Jeff has been approved for Social Security Disability benefits and a Veterans pension from his military service. He should begin receiving checks within the next two months, though not soon enough to fund himself to move.

Jeff is our best friend. We have seen how he is so strong in his conviction to overcome the loss of his legs. He maintains a grace and humor I do not think I would have in a situation such as he has gone through. He isn't looking for a hand-out... He wouldn't ask. That's why we are asking for help for him.

Of course, there is no way to adequately thank you for your help. That stated, Kathy and I are very grateful for anything you can do. I know Jeff is also deeply grateful. We will all find some way to repay your kindness.
