Benefit to help our Dad, Dennis Bunch
On Thursday, July 15, what seemed like a long recovery from a bad bout of the stomach flu a few days earlier turned into a complete life changer for our Dad.
Our Dad has always been the strongest man we know. Sometimes even super human strength but that Thursday he couldn’t climb into his pickup or tie his own shoes.
After a misdiagnosis at Banner Hospital in Fallon our mom had to physically load him into the truck and take him to Renown in Reno. By that time he had declined so badly that he couldn’t even grip the doctor’s hand and had to be taken into the ER by wheelchair. The same man who used to hike Boundary Peak and run up mountainsides was now immobile.
By 2 a.m. Friday morning he would be paralyzed from the neck down by Guillian-Barre Syndrome.
Within hours our parents lives were turned upside down. This autoimmune disease attacks healthy nerve cells quickly and causes paralysis in the body. Fortunately he was admitted quickly enough that he did not have to be intubated but damage is already done.
From the neck down, our Dad has little movement unless helped by physical therapists. He can’t feed himself, sit up by himself or even give his grandson a hug.
His spirits are high but unfortunately we do not know how long he will be in the hospital while having Immunoglobulin Therapy to help slow the progression or rehabilitation after his treatments are complete.
Our parents have helped so many others in their times of need, we ask for your help during theirs.
