Taka Taka Foundation - Let's keep Lamu clean
Takataka Foundation (TTF) is a community based organisation in Lamu, Kenya.
Unfortunately, our little island paradise has become blighted by seemingly endless amounts of waste in our streets, seafront and farms. There has never been a waste management system on Lamu so every single piece of waste ever thrown has been left to blow into the oceans or decay carelessly..
Because of the lack of management residents have no other option but to dump their waste. This means waste is left to pile up and is never reused or repurposed.
But this is what TTF wants to change.
We dream of creating a proper waste management system where waste is sorted, repurposed and recycled.
We came together in 2019. Made up of a small group of like-minded locals with a big vision! We started arranging regular cleanups around the town but quickly realised that simply cleaning up was not the way to fix this systemic problem.
This is when we decided that creating a proper waste management system was the only way to fix this problem.
So far we have achieved a lot.
● We have 3 acres of land that serves as our waste management site
● We have a shredder machine so we’re able to shred and store plastics for later use
● We will be receiving machinery from Plastiki Rafiki so we can turn plastics into precious items on-site ready for resale across the country and the world
● With funding from the Flipflopi Project, we are starting construction for our the onsite shelter for our machinery
● We have a ready and willing community that have already started the cleanup process by creating 100s of ecobricks for our shelter
● We have set up sorting bins to start educating the community on the importance of separating their waste so it can be reused
But what we need now is to hire full-time staff to man the site and start managing and sorting the waste.
This is why we are asking for your help now.
So we can keep our dream of creating a closed-loop waste management system in Lamu we need help to cover some running costs.
We need:
● Just £150 per month to cover the cost of a full-time staff member
● Only £50 per month to cover the cost of electricity
That’s just £200 a month to get us started! This means that any small donation you give can take us a long way towards our dream.
We hope that you will help us turn the tide on plastic waste!
